Here’s this week’s handout:

Greed: A Sin-opsis
The Sin Cluster: Avarice, Materialism, Stinginess, Idolatry, Selfishness
The Virtues They Distort: Aspiration, Enjoyment
Biblical Stories About:

  • Ananias and Saphira: greed led to their deaths (Acts 4)
  • The Rich Fool: gained the world and lost his soul (Luke 12:15-21)
  • Balaam: sold spiritual services (Numbers 22-24; 2 Peter 2:15, Jude 1:11)
  • Gehazi: his greed cost him his ministry and his health (2 Kings 5)
  • Rich Young Ruler: his love of money kept him from salvation (Matthew 19:16-21)
  • Demas: loved the things of this world too much (Col 4:14, Philemon 1:24; 2 Tim 4:9-10)

According to the Bible, greed:

  • is unable to bring happiness (Ecc 5:10)
  • causes conflict (Prov 28:25)
  • is often a motivation for religious charlatans (2 Peter 2:3,14)
  • is a root of all kinds of evil (1 Tim 6:9-10)
  • is idol worship (Col 3:5, Eph 5:5, Luke 16:13)
  • makes God angry (Isa 57:17)
  • is something there should not even be a whiff of within the church (Eph 5:3)
  • is grounds for dismissal from the church (1 Cor 5:11)
  • undermines salvation (1 Cor 6:10)
